Jaipur: Motorists in the Pink City were in for a surprise today with the Traffic Police deploying women constables at major junctions for the first time here at the begining of the Traffic Safety Week.
As an experiment, 18 women traffic constables, including two head constables, were deployed at major junctions, regulating traffic flow and also giving safety tips to motorists.
Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Smita Srivastav told PTI that as Traffic and Road Safety Week was being observed from today, the police decided to deploy women personnel on field duty.
Praising their performance, Srivastav said it was a positive experience and women could be deployed in future also. "Mind you they did a splendid job on the first day and the way motorists responded, gives us a hint that in near future we would deploy them more," she said.
The constables themselves were also very happy at the responsibility and said motorists were more polite and courteous to them as compared to their male counterparts.
Sangita, a traffic constable deployed at Rambagh Circle, said, "I am thrilled with this job. After joining Rajasthan Police for the first time I am standing on the road to ensure smooth traffic and people too have supported me well so far".
Asked, if motorists caught breaking rules were rude or misbehaved, she said, "people cooperated with me in a dignified manner".
