Islamabad: The Scotland Yard team probing the assassination of Benazir Bhutto today examined body parts of other victims of the suicide bombing that killed the former Pakistani premier and questioned doctors at two hospitals in Rawalpindi.
The team from Metropolitan Police's Counter-Terrorism Command, which has been asked by the Pakistan government to complete its probe before the February 18 general election, visited the District Headquarters Hospital and the Combined Military Hospital in the garrison city of Rawalpindi. The team, led by investigator David Keith, inspected body parts of the victims of the suicide bombing in the mortuary of the District Headquarters Hospital. They also took samples of some of the parts collected from the site of the attack.
The hospital's Medical Superintendent Khalid Malik briefed the team about the injured people who were treated at the facility.
At least 24 people were killed in the suicide attack on Bhutto after she had addressed an election rally at Liaquat Bagh on December 27. Malik told the team that out of the 82 people brought to the hospital, 52 were admitted and the rest discharged after being given first aid. Only five persons are still being treated at the hospital, he said.
Earlier, the British investigators visited the Combined Military Hospital where they recorded the statement of Deputy Superintendent of Police Ishtiaq Shah, who was critically injured in the attack.
The team also met senior police officials in Rawalpindi. Tight security arrangements were made at both hospitals for the visit by the investigators. The media has been kept away from the team since it arrived here last week.
