Kannur: Holding that veteran CPI-M leader Jyoti Basu s remarks warming up to capitalism amounted to backtracking on the party's goal of socialism, Communist Marxist Party of India (CMP) leader M V Raghavan today demanded that the party be either rechristened or disbanded.
"If the CPI-M politburo had approved of what Basu had said, the Left party owed an explanation to the Communists who had sacrified their life for realising the party s goals of socialism and Communism," he told a press conference here. The former West Bengal Chief Minister's remarks in favour of capitalism for industrial growth of his state amounted to backtracking on party s goal of a society devoid of class and exploitation, he maintained.
"The CPI-M cannot afford to deceive people any more," Raghavan, a former Kerala Minister, said. Observing that Basu s statement that only capitalism had a role for West Bengal s industrial development had come out of the impasse the ruling party had to face over the recent Nandigram violence, he said the CPI-M had now proved itself to be worse than any other "bourgeois outfits".
