IIM website collides due to traffic overload
Wednesday, January 09, 2008 08:46 [IST]

Mumbai: The Common Admission Test (CAT) results declared on Tuesday threw students offkilter as the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) website www.iimcat.in remained inaccessible. Due to heavy traffic from 3 pm, students were unable to get their scores online. Anxious students could get their scores only through SMS.

With only 1.5 per cent of students out of 2.4 lakh moving on to the next level of admission into India’s top Bschool, the CAT results was a disappointment for most students. The result was announced on Tuesday, with an estimated 3,500 students selected by seven IIMs across the nation.

Neha Thakre, a fourth-year engineering student from Nanded, said, “I was trying to get my scored from a cyber café but to no avail. Finally, I sent a text message on the specified number and got my scores. However, the SMS did not inform about interview calls from any IIM.” Every year each IIM puts up CAT scores on their independent website and the traffic was evenly spread. However, as this year had only one common website through which results were accessible, traffic of nearly 2.4 lakh people overloaded the server and the website crashed.

“Apart from the scores, the website also provided list of selected candidates for Group Discussion. But even after scoring 100 percentiles, this time I am not able to find out whether I have been shortlisted,” said Gourav Bhattacharya, an engineering student from IIT-B. “Results of all the candidates are available on the website. A list of the students to be invited for group discussion and personal interviews is also available,” said Professor Devi Singh, Director, IIM Lucknow.
