At least two persons were killed and several others were injured when police opened fire at protesting students and Samajwadi Party workers. The clashes took place at former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav's village, Safai.
The SP workers were protesting against Tuesday night's incident in which Mulayam's brother and senior SP leader Shivpal Singh was slapped by a Lucknow Police personal.
Reports of violence have also been reported from Varanasi, Allahabad and other parts of the state.
Following the clashes, Mulayam has demanded strict action against the police officers involved in the firing.
