Strike affects normal life in Manipur
Thursday, January 10, 2008 12:50 [IST]

Imphal: Normal life was affected in Manipur today due to a 12-hour general strike called by several organisations in protest against the proposed delimitation of assembly and parliamentary constituencies in the state.

Transport services between Manipur and neighbouring states was disrupted in the wake of the strike which began early morning, official reports said.

Markets, shops, business establishments and cinema halls remained closed at different parts, reports said, adding attendance at government offices also came down.

The strike was called by some organisations, including Delimitation Watch (Manipur) and the Objection Committee Against Delimitation.

The organisations, in separate statements said, delimitation exercise should not be carried out on the basis of 2001 census report "because the report contained thousands of fictitious names" in some hill districts.
