New Delhi: Commerce minister Kamal Nath said the Rs1-lakh Nano will help the common man shift from two-wheelers to four-wheelers. “It is a proud moment for India. It demonstrates India’s technological and entrepreneurial ability,” he said at the Auto Expo on Thursday. “It fulfills the need of the common Indian who aspires to move from a two-wheeler to a four-wheeler,” he added.
In Kolkata, the West Bengal government expressed happiness over Tata Motors unveiling the Nano and said the Singur project, where it would be manufactured, will be completed on time. State industry minister Nirupam Sen said work (on the Singur project) was progressing according to schedule. “We are happy.West Bengal will benefit from the Tata’s Singur project,” he told reporters.
There was praise for the Nano from the World Bank too. In Bangalore, lead economist Andrew Burns said this was the best way to bring technology useful to common people. Speaking to the media on the findings of the ‘Global Economic Prospects-2008’, the World Bank’s annual publication, Burns, also lead author of the report, said, “This car may not match the technology of BMW, but this is the best way to reach more people.”
