Greece PM visit leads to traffic woes
Friday, January 11, 2008 15:13 [IST]

New Delhi: Commuters in the national capital had a harrowing time reaching their destinations today as traffic was thrown out of gear due to Greece Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis visit to Mahatma Gandhi's memorial.

Police blocked the road leading to Raj Ghat at around 10 am as Karamanlis was to lay a wreath at the memorial half an hour later, leading to traffic problems on Nizamuddin bridge, which connects eastern parts of the capital with Lutyen's Delhi.

People were caught in a jam on the bridge for hours even after the restrictions were lifted due to the spill over effect, a senior police official said.
There was heavy traffic on Vikas Marg also as traffic was diverted to it, the official said.

"I had a harrowing time reaching Connaught Place from east Delhi. It took almost two hours today when in normal cases it take just half an hour," Sunil Kumar, an accountant, said.
