New Delhi: The Delhi High Court today reunited a doctor, who married a colleague from a different religion against her parents wishes, with his wife and directed the Delhi Police to provide security to them.
A Division Bench of Justice Vikramjit Sen and Justice P K Bhasin directed the police to provide security to the couple on a habeas corpus petition filed by Sandeep Mawa to trace the whereabouts of his wife allegedly taken away by his father-in-law last year. Today, Mawa's wife appeared in court with her father and the Bench permitted her to stay with him.
According to Mawa, he had married Sumara Shafi, who hails from Srinagar, as per Hindu rites in Pune last August. After their marriage, the couple returned to Mawa's house in Delhi where his parents accepted Sumara as she had changed her name to Sumi Mawa, he claimed.
The petition said a few days later Sumara's father Mohd Shafi Batkoo, along with three others, came to her matrimonial home and convinced her in-laws for solemnising the marriage at Srinagar as they belonged to a different community and took her away.
Despite Mawa's attempt to contact Batkoo and his wife, he was neither allowed to meet her nor talk to her and he was threatened by Batkoo, the petitioner alleged.
Following the court's earlier order, Batkoo appeared before the Bench along with his daughter. After recording Samara's statement the court allowed her to stay with her husband and asked the police to provide them protection.
