New Delhi: The Supreme Court today dismissed a petition seeking a probe against top Bangaluru police officials for their alleged role in the communal clash between two communities and subsequent firing after the hanging of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussain.
A Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan refused to pass an order on the petition filed by an NGO, Muslim Youth for Peaceful and Progressive India, which also sought compensation for victims of the incident in which a child was killed and some women were injured.
Pleading for an independent inquiry into the whole incident in which a child was killed in police firing, senior advocate Raju Ramachandran, appearing for the NGO said, "A proper enquiry is needed into the matter so that such events are not repeated in future in the peaceful city of Bangaluru."
The communal clash took place on January 21 last after Saddam Hussain's hanging. The NGO alleged that the role of police was doubtful and women as well as children were targeted by them. The NGO had approached the apex court after the Karnataka High Court dismissed the PIL seeking probe into the incident.
