PPP wants to "dig deeper" into Bhutto killing plot
Tuesday, January 15, 2008 00:14 [IST]

ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan premier Benazir Bhutto's party, which has sought a UN-led investigation into her killing, on Sunday said it wanted to "dig deeper" into the plot to murder her so that the perpetrators, planners and financiers of the assassination could be uncovered.

Reacting to President Pervez Musharraf's remarks that Bhutto's body should be exhumed, her Pakistan People's Party (PPP) said the post-mortem should have been done at the initial stage by the government.

If any request for an autopsy comes now, the decision would be taken by the family of Bhutto, PPP spokesman Faratullah Babar said. "But as of now there is no request from the government for a post-mortem."

Pakistan government is probing the December 27 killing of Bhutto with the help of Britain's Scotland Yard experts, who have been asked to focus on the cause of her death only. Babar said the PPP is not interested in the exact cause of Bhutto's death like whether she died of a bullet wound or some other injury.

The party "wants to dig deeper" to find the perpetrators, planners and financiers of the assassination and that is why has sought a UN-led inquiry into Bhutto's killing, he said. His comments came as Musharraf, in an interview to 'Newsweek', ruled out a UN probe, saying that such a demand was "ridiculous."
