CBI fails to secure translated order in Bofors
Tuesday, January 15, 2008 13:17 [IST]

New Delhi: CBI today informed the Supreme Court that it has failed to secure official translation from Spanish to English of the Argentinian court order rejecting its plea for extradition of Bofors accused Ottavio Quattrocchi.

Additional Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium told a Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan that despite the best efforts of the investigative agency it has failed to get the translated order.

After this submission, the agency placed before the Bench a copy of the order translated by it. The court posted the matter for further hearing after three weeks.

The court on November 26 last had granted CBI time to file a "true and correct translation" from Spanish to English of the order of an Argentinian court.

The apex court had directed the CBI to file the June 8 order of the El Dorado court in Argentina declining India's plea seeking extradition of 69-year-old Quattrocchi.

The Italian businessman, who was detained on February 6 last year on the basis of a Red Corner notice, was released on bail on February 23.
