New Delhi: The Congress today said it was not against the birthday celebrations of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati but would object if government machinery or public funds were misutilised for the purpose.
AICC General Secretary Digvijay Singh, who is in charge of party affairs in UP, said only three persons can object in the matter of gifts - one who is the receiver, second is the donor and the third is the Income Tax Department.
He, however, said the party would have strong objections to the celebrations if the allegations that government machinery and public funds were misutilised in the birthday bash were true. He extended birthday greetings to Mayawati, but said he never celebrated his birthday.
