Wednesday, January 16, 2008 14:12 [IST]

New Delhi: The government today said about four lakh birds have been culled in the wake of a bird flu outbreak in some parts of West Bengal.

A localised occurrence of the highly contagious Avian Influenza was reported from Birbhum and West Dinajpur districts of the state yesterday.

Agriculture and Food Minister Sharad Paward today said the nearby places have been alerted about the outbreak and preventive measures were being taken.

However, the minister said the situation was under control.
