Kathmandu: The dissident leaders of the Nepali Congress party has warned that if the grievances of Madhesi groups are not addressed before the Constituent Assembly poll it could lead to the "disintegration of Terai".
The warning came from over 40 NC lawmakers a day after the seven-party coordination committee discussed holding the election in two phases keeping in mind the security situation in the Terai.
"Holding CA polls in two phases by deploying a maximum number of security personnel can be disastrous," NC central member Govinda Raj Joshi warned at the meeting of the dissident group held here in the presence of party s general secretary K B Gurung.
The meeting drew the attention of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala towards "untoward incidents" if the government ever did a mistake by "imposing meaningless" election in the Terai without resolving the Madhesi issues, party sources said.
Party general secretary Gurung, central member Joshi and other dissident leaders of the party also opposed the idea of holding joint meetings with the Maoists in Terai.
"This is objectionable and is against our party line," NC central member Bijaya Gachhadar said charging the Maoists with "trying to reap" the fruits of the NC s influence in the Terai.
The Maoists have proposed to hold joint mass meetings specially in Terai after their bases were weakened by the agitation by different Madhesi groups.
