Goa government will survive: NCP
Friday, January 18, 2008 16:54 [IST]

New Delhi: Despite Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat virtually throwing up his hands, coalition partner NCP on Friday expressed confidence that the crisis-ridden government will survive.

"The government will survive. We will find some solution," NCP General Secretary Praful Patel told reporters soon after returning here from Panaji where he had been rushed along with another party leader D P Tripathi on a troubleshooting mission.

Patel said since the party MLAs, whose defiance has plunged the Congress-led government in the state into crisis, are talking to the NCP leadership and have 'not walked out', some solution appeared possible.

At the same time, he said, 'some commitments' that have been made to some legislators earlier have to be honoured.

He, however, did not elaborate on the commitments. But Patel's optimism was in sharp contrast to Kamat's comment that God will save his government.

Kamat, who arrived in the national capital this morning for talks with the Central leadership, said, "God will save my government".

He is expected to meet Congress President Sonia Gandhi and other senior party leaders to find a way out of the political crisis in the coastal state.

The seven-month-old Kamat government on Wednesday became a minority regime with its alliance partner NCP and an independent legislator Vishwajit Rane withdrawing support.
