London: Britain plans to announce a series of measures next week to further toughen the anti-terror laws and facilitate detention of terrorism suspects upto 42 days without charge, it was officially stated today.
British Home Secretary Jacqui Smith will introduce in the House of Commons the plans to increase the limit to hold terror suspects without charge from 28 days to 42 days, allow police to take DNA samples from terror suspects and to urge judges to impose stiffer sentences on criminals whose offences are linked to terrorism, a spokesman of 10, Downing Street said.
The move is expected to opposed by the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and human right campaigners. Smith has said that extending pre-charge detention is vital because of the increasing complexity and the international nature of terrorist plots. In an effort to woo Muslims, the Home Secretary yesterday said in future fanatics would be referred to as pursuing "anti-Islamic activity" instead of calling them Islamic terrorists. "Extremists are behaving contrary to their faith, rather than acting in the name of Islam."
Security officials believe that directly linking terrorism to Islam is inflammatory, and risks alienating mainstream Muslim opinion.
