Friday, February 01, 2008 14:53 [IST]

New Delhi: The Interpol today issued a red corner notice against absconding Dr Amit Kumar, the kingpin of the multi-crore kidney transplant racket, and his brother.

The CBI had approached the Interpol for issuing the notice against the kidney racket accused. Sources said the Gurgaon police had written to the CBI to approach the Interpol for issuance of the red corner notice against Dr Amit Kumar and co-accused Dr Jeevan Kumar.

The doctors are believed to have fled the country following the raids If he has not fled the country so far, the doctor may make attempts to escape through illegal channels using his foreign contacts, the sources added.

Police have circulated photographs of Dr Amit Kumar and Dr Jeevan Kumar and alerted airports across the country. A red corner notice entails that most countries would be looking out for him.

Dr Amit Kumar along with several others had allegedly carried out more than 500 illegal kidney transplants during the past several years. Police said the doctors used to sell each kidney for anything between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 20 lakh, they added.
