Coimbatore: Rejecting Centre's argument that petroleum product prices had to be hiked due to international price rise, CPI(M) politburo member Sitaram Yechuri said the party would totally oppose the move.
Yechury said the Centre's argument was "not true".
The government might have made profit in tune with the increase in international prices and best thing it could do now was to rationalise the tax and refund the profit to the people, Yechury told reporters here.
"We have made it clear that we would not allow any hike in the prices, which would be an additional burden on the people, who were already suffering due to inflation and price rise of essential commodities," Yechury said, replying to a question on the possibility of Rs two hike in petrol prices.
