BJP hartal hits life in Palakkad
Wednesday, February 06, 2008 12:23 [IST]

Palakkad: Normal life here was seriously affected and inter-state bus services hit by a district hartal called by BJP today to protest the arrest of some party workers under the Goodas Act.

Shops remained closed, schools and colleges went without classes and the state-run and private buses remained off the road throughout the district as the hartal got underway.

Attendance was poor in government offices. The traffic was also affected in the busy Palakkad-Coimbatore route where bus services of both Kerala and Tamil Nadu remained cancelled.

Buses from other places in Tamil Nadu like Pollachi and Palani were also terminated at the border points. Barring a few cases of stone-pleting at trucks, no major untoward incident was reported from anywhere, police said.

The hartal was called to protest "politically motivated" arrest of some BJP workers in connection with the murder of two CPI-M workers at Kadukkamkunnu in the district.

BJP leaders said some of the party workers who were on bail in connection with the case was arrested yesterday under the Goodas Act.
