Karachi: Unidentified gunmen killed an Awami National Party leader here today, sparking tension in Pashtun-dominated parts of this southern Pakistani port city.
Fazlur Rehman, the ANP's vice-president for Sindh province, was killed and another person was injured when the gunmen ambushed the car they were travelling in, police said. Rehman, 50,died on the spot.
The killing triggered unrest in areas dominated by the ANP and the party's angry supporters organised protests. They pelted stones at vehicles and tried to block a highway by burning tyres.
A large contingent of police and paramilitary Pakistan Rangers was deployed in the troubled areas, officials said. The security forces also stepped up patrolling in the areas.
