'VHP to support BJP in the next general elections'
Sunday, February 10, 2008 15:53 [IST]

Varanasi: Dismissing rumours of distance between them as merely a "wishful thinking" of the media, Vishwa Hindu Parishad has announced its support for BJP in the next Lok Sabha elections.

"We will fully support the Bharatiya Janata Party in the next general elections," Ashok Singhal, International Executive President of VHP, told PTI here.

Rebutting all the rumours about distance between the two saffron organisation, he said: "if VHP will not support BJP, will it support Sonia or Rahul Gandhi?"

When asked about reports that it was VHP which opposed Narendra Modi in the Gujarat Assembly elections, he said: "it was all wishful thinking of the media.

"If VHP had opposed Modi, had the election results been like this?" he asked. "There is no question of any opposition to Modi or BJP. It's all lie, big lie," he said.

"There can be some differences amongst the members of a family but that does not mean they are enemies," he said. On the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal, the saffron leader claimed "it will make our country subservient to the US and it is against our sovereignty."

When told that the deal was finalised by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and not the Congress party, he alleged: "it is known to every body in the country that the central government does only those things, which Sonia (Gandhi) approves."

He said that the VHP will expose the Congress in the coming elections. Lauding AIDMK leader and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa for demanding that Ram Setu be declared a "national heritage", he said VHP will fully support her in Tamil Nadu in the coming elections.
