Midnapore (WB): Probably for the first time, a woman of a non-tribal Bengali family was today hacked to death by her children suspecting her to be a witch.
Two men and their sister killed their mother Krishna Ghosh (55) at Tilaboni under Salbani police station in Paschim Midnapore district. District Magistrate N S Nigam said the Ghosh family had been suffering from ailments. The family members had contacted a witch doctor who said Krishna was under the influence of an evil spirit and she should be eliminated.
Her children followed the instruction with the belief that their mother would come alive again, Nigam said. Such incidents were till now known in scheduled tribe families but probably this was the first in a non-tribal family, he said. Krishna's husband, two sons and daughter, a widow, were arrested, he said.
