Self-immolation threat keeps police on toes
Monday, February 11, 2008 15:38 [IST]

Coimbatore: A threat by a man to immolate himself in the district collectorate complex kept the police and the media on their toes for more than an hour today.

According to police, the man from Sirumugai, about 45 KMs from here, had threatened to commit self-immolation alleging that local police refused to register his complaint against a former panchayat president under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act.

The Sirumugai Police alerted the city police. Accordingly, adequate number of police personnel kept a vigil in and around the Collectorate to prevent the incident while press photographers and camera crew thronged the place hearing about the threat.

Police located the 40-year old person, who told them that though he had unintentionally talked about committing suidice, he had only come to give a memorandum to the Collector, today being public grievances day.
