City will soon have cyclone shelters
Monday, February 11, 2008 19:08 [IST]

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has plans to upscale its disaster management operations.

In order to reduce loss of human lives in the wake of cyclones, it has decided to build cyclone shelters. These shelters will be set up in densely populated areas near the coast, where large scale evacuations are not always feasible.

They will be located within 10 km from the sea on elevated areas and will serve as community buildings,  additional municipal commissioner Kishore Gajbhiye said.

To start with, four schools in coastal zones will be used to build these shelters. With predictions of an early onset of monsoon, BMC has also began preparing for it.
