Thane central jail has witnessed frequent bouts of fighting over the past month, with the jail alarm being rung on at least seven occasions
Mumbai: Fed up with the alleged high-handedness and threats of his superiors, a constable from Thane central jail has complained to the higher-ups.
In letters to the inspector-general of police (prisons) and the deputy inspector-general of police, Santosh Bhonsale has accused his seniors at the jail of threatening and manhandling him within the premises.
Confirming the incident, a senior official from the prison department said an inquiry has been instituted to investigate the allegations. “The vigilance department is looking into the matter,” said the official, who asked not to be identified. “The report is expected in a week.”
The official also said there were reports that the constable took two inmates to hospital without the permission of his superiors, which resulted in a heated argument.
Meanwhile, the mother of an inmate of the jail has also complained to the authorities about the assaults and torture that goes on within the prison. The inmate, Shamsuddin Shaikh, is in prison for allegedly attacking a public servant. His mother, Shakira, has sent a letter to the jail authorities saying he was tortured.
In the letter, a copy of which is with DNA, Shakira alleged that merciless beating had resulted in multiple fractures in Shamsuddin’s legs. The mother said he was given nominal medical treatment when he could not stand up.
