Nagpur: Shiv Sena nominee Nanda Gopal Lohbare today won the Zila Parishad by-poll for Tarsa seat in the district, defeating NCP candidate by over 3,000 votes.

The by-poll was necessitated following the death of sitting member Gopal Lohbare who was killed six months ago. Nanda, widow of Lohbare, defeated her NCP rival Laxman Umale by a margin of 3,424 votes.

The electioneering in Tarsa recorded violence and a former Zila Parishad vice-president and Congress Leader Dynashwar Sathwane was lynched by an angry mob on Thursday night.

Sathawne was alleged to be involved in Lohbare s murder. Sathwane's killing evoked a violent protest in Tarsa. Sathwane was beaten up by sticks and lynched by an angry mob soon after the election meeting of NCP was over.

The state PWD Minister Anil Deshmukh had just finished the meeting and was leaving when Sathwane was killed. Angry crowd also damaged some vehicles including that of Deshmukh who was accompanied by former MLA Ashok Dhawad.

About 70 per cent polling was recorded during yesterday's voting and counting was taken up amidst huge police deployment. Tension is still prevailing in the area though no major untoward incident was reported.
