Pak EC postpones polls in Waziristan constituency
Thursday, February 14, 2008 01:17 [IST]

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Election Commission on Wednesday postponed elections in a constituency in the restive Waziristan tribal region due to the law and order situation in the area.

Election Commission Secretary Kanwar Dilshad said in a statement that the polls to the NA-42 constituency in Waziristan had been postponed until further orders.

This was done after reports received from the Secretary of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas said the law and order situation in South Waziristan Agency was not conducive to holding elections.

Pakistan will go to the polls on February 18 to elect new national and provincial assemblies. Waziristan has witnessed intense fighting between pro-Taliban militants and security forces in recent weeks.
