Washington: The United States is appealing a World Trade Organisation ruling upholding Brazil s complaint that US farm subsidies, particularly to cotton grower, violate global trade rules, a US official said today.
Washington filed its appeal yesterday in the WTO dispute brought by Brazil alleging that the United States had failed to implement earlier WTO findings against US agricultural support, including for cotton farmers, said Gretchen Hamel, a spokeswoman fr US Trade Representative (USTR) Susan Schwab.
Hamel said the United States was appealing the ruling because it had "brought its programmes into full compliance with the WTO s recommendations and rulings in the original cotton case."
The USTR spokeswoman said the appeal came after a report by a WTO compliance panel that found that certain changes made by the United States to its cotton programmes were insufficient to bring the challenged measures into conformity with WTO rules.
At issue are certain support payments under the 2002 farm bill and export credit guarantees, she said in a statement.
