Anti-hijacking law in the making: UPA
Thursday, February 14, 2008 09:11 [IST]

New Delhi: In a bid to send strong signal to the hijackers, the UPA government now plans to adopt zero tolerance policy towards such incidents.

Clarifying the government's stand on the issue, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said that the government wanted to send out a strong signal to such people involved in hijacking. He also added that hijacking is unpardonable crime.

Now, the UPA government has drawn up a free-handed anti-hijacking law, which will not only consider a hijacking bid as an act of aggression against the country but also leave little space for negotiations with hijackers.

Adding more to it, the law will give airport personnel authority to take swift action to immobilise aircrafts at the airport itself. It also proposes the death penalty for hijackers.
