Asif Ali Zardari - Shakti Kapoor of Pak politics?
Thursday, February 14, 2008 16:07 [IST]

asif_ali_zardariIslamabad: Pakistan People's Party Asif AliZardari has become a staple of comedy TV shows since he started sending out feelers on his intentions of becoming the country's next prime minister.

The popular comedy show 'Hum Sab Umeed Sai Hain' -- which often serves as a barometer of the popularity, or lack there of, of political personalities - had a Zardari look-alike in its latest show describing himself as the 'Shakti Kapoor of Pakistani politics'.

The look-alike spoke at length about how important the 'jail experience' is for a future prime minister.

"Eleven-and-a-half-years in prison gives me the edge over the other candidates," said the look-alike on the comedy show aired by Geo News.

Zardari, who earned the sobriquet of 'Mr 10 per cent' after graft charges were levelled against him during his late wife Benazir Bhutto's two terms as prime minister, was appointed co-chairman of the PPP following her assassination in December.

Responding to a question from the host of 'Hum Sab UmeedSai Hai' about what would happen if he won the elections, the Zardari look-alike said: "Then the elections are not rigged!"

Zardari, who now effectively controls the affairs of the PPP, has strongly indicated he would be interested in the prime ministerial slot should the party come to power in the elections to be held on February 18.

Another popular channel, Aaj TV, ran a two-part mock interview of Zardari.

Khalid Butt, the host, was ruthless.

"What is your connection with the PPP?" Butt asked.

The Zardari look-alike who appeared on this show said: "My connection with the PPP is the same that a husband has with a wife. I got PPP as dowry and I will treat it like a dowry".

Asked if jails create good leaders, the look-alike said, "That is a wrong perception. Jails create leechars (pests). Had I not gone to jail I would have become Mr 100 per cent."

Asked about his ideal concept of parliament, the look-alike pulled out an old register and read out, "The assembly should begin with prayers, the national anthem should be sung, more prayers should be read".

"Nails of all members should be checked, they should form a line to enter the assembly  and this we have mentioned in our vision of democracy," the look-alike told Butt.

The look-alike also said he wanted to be a scientist and that would always remain his unfulfilled wish.

"I was doing research on horses, if they can eat murabba. But they give it a wrong twist and sent me to jail."
