Kathmandu: India has sanctioned Rs 48.13 million to construct a school building in a pension camp of the Indian Embassy in Pokhara region of Nepal.

Counsellor, Economic, Pranay Verma, laid the foundation stone of the new building for the Nepal Bharat Maitri Vidyalaya at the complex of the camp yesterday, an official release said.

There are over 122,000 ex-servicemen staying in Nepal at present. The Indian government has established a school in Pokhra July 2000 with a view to providing quality education to their children.

India and Nepal signed an agreement on August 24,2006 for setting up a higher secondary school affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education of India (CBSE) to ensure consistency in educational pattern for the children of Nepalese ex-servicemen on their return from India to Nepal.

The school, which is currently running classes up to eighth standard, will be upgraded on completion of the new building.
