Cyprus President in surprise election defeat

Nicosia: Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos was defeated in a presidential election today, with challengers Demetris Christofias and Ioannis Kasoulides set for a second-round runoff in a week, according to final results.

Former foreign minister and MEP Kasoulides won 33.51 per cent of the vote followed by communist party leader Christofias with 33.29 per cent while Papadopoulos trailed in third place with 31.79 per cent.

Kasoulides won first the first round by just 980 votes.

Turnout in the election in Cyprus, where voting is compulsory, was around 90 per cent.
