Phoolan murder case: Rana seeks transfer of trial
Tuesday, February 19, 2008 13:42 [IST]

New Delhi: Sher Singh Rana, prime accused in the Smajwadi Party MP Phoolan Devi murder case, today sought the transfer of his trial to some other court in the capital, saying that he did not have faith in the judge hearing the case.

"I do not have faith in you. Kindly transfer the case to any other court," Rana said in the court of Additional Sessions Judge V K Bansal.

The court taking into account Rana's submission, transferred his plea to the judge incharge Mamta Sehgal of the Patiala House court for considering the matter.

Rana's submission came when the court was about to record a statement of a prosecution witness Bahadur Shah.

Shah was produced by prosecution as the accused had allegedly fled away in his auto-rickshaw after committing the crime.

According to the prosecution, Rana along with 11 others had conspired to kill Phoolan to avenge the 1981 Behmai massacre, in which she killed 17 people, all Thakurs.

The Samajwadi party MP was killed outside her Ashoka Road residence here on July 25,2001.
