Tuesday, February 19, 2008 15:05 [IST]

Baghdad: At least five people were killed and 16 wounded, including two US soldiers, in a barrage of rockets on a US military base in the Iraqi capital, the US military said on Tuesday.

The incident took place when insurgents fired a series of rockets on the Victory Base Complex in southwestern Baghdad on Monday afternoon, a military statement said.

Citing initial reports, the statement put the toll at five Iraqis killed and 14 wounded, eight of whom were transported to a US military clinic for treatment.

Two US soldiers were also wounded in the attack on the base, which is located within the perimeter of the Baghdad airport, it added.

US and Iraqi security forces searched the area where the rockets were launched and captured six suspected insurgents, the statement said without specifying the location of the scene of the rocket launch.
