Beijing: Rejecting any international move to impose sanctions and put pressure on the junta rule in Myanmar, China today said it supported the UN's mediatory efforts in the Southeast Asian country.
"Pressures and sanctions at this time will not help solve the problem," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao told reporters, as the UN Envoy for Myanmar Ibrahim Gambhari met Chinese leaders and diplomats in his quest to find a way to bring reform in the junta-ruled country.
Gambhari, here since yesterday on a trip that also takes him to Singapore, Japan and Indonesia on the Myanmar issue, met Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and Vice-Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Liu said both sides had an in-depth exchange of views on Myanmar.
The Chinese Foreign Minister told the UN envoy that China hoped for peace and stability at an early date in Myanmar and that the international community should deal with the issue in a "balanced and objective attitude and keep patience and confidence," Liu said.
Liu said China's policy was first not to interfere in the internal affairs of Myanmar as "we believe that, in the ultimate analysis, the issue should be solved through a dialogue and consultations between the people and the government."
"The international community shall do more things that are conducive to social harmony, stability and development of Myanmar," he said. Source : PTI
