White House refuses to comment on Pak polls
Tuesday, February 19, 2008 19:10 [IST]

Washington: The White House has refused to comment on the general election in Pakistan where opposition parties PPP and PML-N have emerged as the largest parties, saying it was waiting for a "final result" of the polls.

With results out for 248 of the 269 National Assembly seats for which the polling took place yesterday, slain former premier Benazir Bhutto's PPP bagged 85 seats while PML-N of former premier Nawaz Sharif was at the second position with 65.

"For many weeks, almost months now, since the announcement that there would be elections on February 18th, what we have encouraged is for people to be able to express their vote freely, and for this election to inspire confidence in people about their government," White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said aboard Air Force One enroute to Rwanda in Africa.

"And so until we have more of a final result, I'll decline to comment on those," she said.
