Tuesday, February 19, 2008 23:48 [IST]

Islamabad: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf Tuesday said he hoped Pakistan would move in a positive direction in the changed scenario and that the new government would work in a harmonious manner with all stakeholders.

Talking to a delegation of US Senators Joseph Biden, John Kerry and Chuck Hagel here at the President's House, Musharraf said that his unswerving commitment to democracy was once again vindicated by holding of free, fair, transparent and peaceful elections in the country.

The official Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) quoted Musharraf as saying that the post-election scenario has unfolded new political dynamics, which hopefully would move in a positive direction. Musharraf stressed that all political parties must now focus on the future and cooperate in the best interest of the country. The US senators have been in Pakistan to observe the general elections.

The senators appreciated Musharraf for fulfilling his commitment to hold the election in a free and transparent manner. They said Musharraf now has a great opportunity to strengthen the democratic process and take the country forward. They noted that a democratic, economically stable and strong Pakistan is important for regional peace and stability.

They also pointed at the role of Pakistan in fighting against terrorism and said it was important not only for the country but also for the world at large.
