UN chief hails peaceful Pakistan elections
Wednesday, February 20, 2008 00:33 [IST]

United Nations: UN chief Ban Ki-moon today hailed the peaceful conduct of the parliamentary elections in Pakistan and said he was encouraged by the commitment of all parties to respect the democratic process, his press office said.

"He commends the people of Pakistan for the largely peaceful conduct of yesterday s parliamentary elections and is encouraged by the commitment of all concerned to respect the democratic process," a UN statement said.

Unofficial results showed a rout of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q) close to Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, placing him at risk of a hostile parliament that, in theory, could seek his impeachment.
