USNRC team to visit Kalpakkam in March

Mumbai: A team from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will arrive here on a nine-day visit from February 25, an Atomic Energy Regulatory Board official said.

This is part of the annual practice of exchanging information on safety and regulatory aspects of civilian nuclear power plants with the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, (AERB).

The six-member team will be headed by James Edward Lyons, director, Division for Site and Environmental Reviews, Office of New Reactors, AERB Secretary, Om Pal Singh, told PTI.

The team along with US Consular for Science and Technology, Environment and Health Affairs, Satish Kulkarni, will participate in scientific and technical sessions to exchange information and share experiences on safety and regulatory issues of various civilian nuclear plants in both US and India from February 25 to 29, he said.

The team will later go to Kalpakkam near Chennai in Tamil Nadu to visit Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) and also the newly formed company to look after India's Fast Breeder nuclear power plants 'Bharatiya Nabhiya Vidyut Nigam Ltd., (BHAViNI)' from March 2 to 4, Singh added.
