Religious leaders to fight female foeticide
Wednesday, February 20, 2008 19:23 [IST]

New Delhi: In a new initiative to counter the scourge of female foeticide in the country, leaders of different faith have come together to launch a campaign against the social evil. Inaugurating the campaign here today, Vice President Hamid Ansari said female foeticide could not be countered merely with the help of law.

"It is not a problem, but a disease," he said, adding "No new law will help. Instead, look into the mirror and ask yourself as to when it began and how can it be cured."

"Needless to say, the figures are alarming. If we do not put a full stop to it now, it will be worse than AIDS and cancer. We now hear of female foeticide from posh areas of Delhi too," said Jain leader Yuva Acharya Lokesh. Muslim leader Mufti Mohammad Mukarram said Islam does not allow female foeticide and termed it as a blot on humanity.

"No society is complete without a woman. What women can contribute to the society and the home, no man can achieve it," he said.
