New Delhi: The CBSE can scale down marks awarded to students in internal assessment if it finds them inflated.
The CBSE has decided to take this step after it found that the internal assessment by many teachers in schools bears very little correlation to the levels of competence of students as judged by their performance in board examinations.
In a circular issued to all heads of CBSE-affiliated institutions, the Board has said this trend defeats the objective of internal assessment system. "The Board has viewed this phenomenon with grave concern. It is brought to the notice of all schools and concerned teachers that the Board will keep a close watch on such discrepancies and may resort to downscaling of inflated marks awarded as internal assessment," the circular said.
The objective of internal assessment system is to promote interest in the subject and enhance academic attainment of students, it pointed out.
The Board conducted an analysis of the results of 2006 and 2007 and found discrepancy in the marks obtained by students in internal assessment and the theory papers of the corresponding subjects.
The Board said it reserves the right to demand all relevant documents, including answer sheets and other records related to school-based assessment, and explain the discrepancies.
The schools are required to maintain detailed records of practical work, project work and assignments for six months. The Board may inspect these documents, if need be, the circular said. Source : PTI
