New Delhi: Eminent economist and member of the Commission on Centre State Relations Amaresh Bagchi died here today.

Bagchi (77), a former Director of the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, is survived by wife and two children. An expert in public finance, particularly tax policy and tax administration, Bagchi was also a member of the Finance Commission and had authored several books.

Condoling his death, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Bagchi was one of the most distinguished and influential fiscal policy analysts and experts. "It is no exaggeration to state that Amaresh has been associated with almost every major fiscal policy reform of the past 30 years," he said, adding that as a member of the Finance Commission Bagchi had contributed to major policy initiatives in the field of Centre and state finances.
