Slum dwellers protest demolition drive
Saturday, February 23, 2008 13:13 [IST]
Amravati: Hundreds of slum dwellers from the Vitabhatti locality demonstrated in front of guardian minister Sunil Deshmukh house demanding to stop the demolitions carried out by the district administration here.

The agitators also took out a `morcha to the Collector Office yesterday pressing for their demands. The Vitabhatti slum is near the SP bungalow.

According to the district administration, the slum encroaches the government land, and hence it is being removed from there.

After demonstrating in front of Deshmukh's house yesterday the protestors went to the Collector office and handed over a memorandum to him regarding the matter following which the Collector assured them that houses of those paying taxes will be spared in the drive.
