UP assembly adjourned on farmers' issue
Monday, March 10, 2008 13:41 [IST]

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Assembly was adjourned for half an hour following some uproarious scenes created by the Samajwadi Party (SP) and BJP members in the House.

They were agitated over the lathicharge on the farmers in Ramkola in Deoria district on March 6 last. As the House began for the day, the opposition members were on their feet dubbing Mayawati-led government as anti-farmer while demanding action against the erring officials.

Some of the SP and BJP members, supported by the Congress members, stormed into well of the House disrupting the proceedings.

They argued that the peaceful demonstration of the farmers in support of their demands was lathicharged without any provocation.

Despite repeated appeals to maintain order in the House, the din continued prompting Assembly speaker Sukhdev Rajbhar to adjourn the House for half an hour.

Though, bowing to opposition pressure, the government was directed to give a statement on the subject tomorrow.
