United Nations: The UN Security Council is demanding that Rwandan rebels in eastern Congo lay down their arms.
A resolution adopted unanimously by the council today threatens further sanctions if fighting continues in the restive border region.
The resolution urged warlords and militia fighters in eastern Congo, and the Congolese government, to take immediate action to implement the peace accord they signed in late January.
It commits all parties to an immediate cease-fire followed by a withdrawal of fighters from key areas.
The Security Council said the January peace deal and an agreement in November between Congo and Rwanda that calls for Congo to disarm Rwandan Hutu rebels "represent a major step towards the restoration of lasting peace and stability in the Great Lakes region."
