Toronto: An Indo-Canadian man was sentenced to 27 months imprisonment in connection with a cocaine trafficking case and may face deportation. Kanwarranbir Singh Dhuna, 22,was sentenced to jail by a Calgary court and "may be subjected to deportation proceedings" under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, Calgary Herald reported today.
"The nature of the offence of possession of crack cocaine for the purpose of trafficking is particularly grave," Judge Terry Semenuk said in his written decision. Semenuk also prohibited Dhuna from possessing or owning any firearms or other weapons for 10 years and asked him to provide a DNA sample for a national offender s data bank.
"This court has emphasised several times in other cases that crack cocaine is a very dangerous drug. It is highly addictive and is responsible for much derivative property and violent crime in the community," he said. Crown prosecutor Scott Couper had argued for a sentence of three to three-and-half years.
Defence lawyer Jim Lutz had a sought a conditional jail sentence of two years less a day, to be served in the community. Dhuna s brother was also sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment in 2006 for mowing down a group of people near a Kensington bar.
