5.7-magnitude quake rattles southern Mexico

Tuxtla Gutierrez: A moderate earthquake shook southern Mexico, without immediate reports of significant damage or injuries. The 5.7-magnitude quake struck at 5:01 pm local time (04:31 IST) today and was centered offshore, 78 km southwest of the city of Mapastepec in Chiapas state, according to the US Geological Survey.

Salvador Cervantes, spokesman for Civil Protection in Chiapas, said he spoke with police in 118 towns and cities and all was normal throughout the affected area. About 70 tremors have shaken the state since January, he said.
