New Delhi: Arms dealer Suresh Nanda along with his son and two others were today remanded to 14 days judicial custody by a Delhi court in a case of manipulating evidence on alleged kickbacks received by him in defence deals.
Nanda, his son Sanjeev, also an accused in the BMW hit-and-run case, his chartered accountant Bipin Shah and Income Tax deputy director (investigation) Ashutosh Verma were produced before Special Judge I K Kochhar, who sent them to judicial custody till March 28.
All the four, arrested on March 8 from a Mumbai hotel in a raid, had earlier been remanded to three days CBI custody.
Earlier seeking their custody for seven more days, the CBI contended that they were to be confronted with documents seized by the Income Tax department during raids at Nanda group members and their associates on February 28, 2007.
The agency also claimed to be in possession of intercepted telephonic conversation of the four accused indicating their involvement to influence the probe against Nanda in the defence deals as middleman.
The CBI also claimed that Verma, a 1999-batch IRS officer, had received huge bribe for evasion of income tax on the part of Nanda and also purchased a benami property in Goa.
Opposing the CBI demand, Nanda's counsel, senior advocate Siddharth Luthra contended that there was no ground for further remand as the accused had been in CBI's custody for seven days.
Similarly, the counsel for other accused also argued against the CBI's pleas.
Nanda, his son Sanjeev and Shah also filed bail application, which have been listed for March 19 by the court.
