New Delhi: Although HIV / AIDS figures have been revised downwards in India, an increasing trend of HIV infection has been documented in states where it was less in the past.
States like Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Orissa, Rajasthan, West Bengal and the Union Territory of Puducherry are some of such areas, Union Health Minister A Ramadoss told Rajya Sabha in a written reply today.
High risk behaviour like unprotected sex with multiple partners, men having sex with men and injecting drug use are few of the reasons behind the trend.
Other reasons include large number of out-migrations to high prevalence far-flung areas, number of national highways and a large number of truckers passing through them, low levels of awareness and demand for services, and less well developed services delivery for preventive care and counselling and testing, he said.
